The Simien Mountains National Park is a breathtaking natural wonder in northern Ethiopia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its dramatic landscapes, unique wildlife, and thrilling trekking experiences. Often referred to as the “Roof of Africa,” the park features jagged peaks, deep valleys, and towering cliffs sculpted over millions of years. It is home to rare and endemic species, including the Gelada baboon, Walia ibex, and Ethiopian wolf, alongside stunning alpine vegetation like giant lobelias. Trekkers can explore routes of varying difficulty, from gentle hikes around Sankaber to challenging multi-day expeditions reaching Ras Dashen, Ethiopia’s highest peak at 4,550 meters. The park also offers cultural encounters with local Amhara communities who live in harmony with the rugged environment. The best time to visit is during the dry season from October to March, which provides clear skies and optimal trekking conditions. Visitors must travel with experienced guides and scouts to navigate the park’s trails safely and fully appreciate its natural beauty and cultural richness. Whether you’re seeking panoramic views, close encounters with wildlife, or a challenging adventure, the Simien Mountains National Park promises an unforgettable experience.

FLY TO GONDAR (UNESCO – WORLD HERITAGE SITE)

This morning we fly to Gondar, the former capital of Ethiopia. Gondar has now become one of Ethiopia’s largest and most impressive cities, with its walled Royal Enclosure. Gondar’s most famous monuments are its exceptionally well preserved 17th century castles. The largest and best is that of King Fasilidas. It is a stone-built construction with round turrets and wooden balconies. The king also built a remarkable bath a mile or so outside of town known as the ‘Pavilion of Delight’. The Bathhouse of Fasil at which thousands of Ethiopians celebrate Timkat festival every January. This whole complex of buildings is unique in Ethiopia and unlike anything found elsewhere in Africa. This afternoon we’ll also make a visit to the Debre Birhan Selassie church (Light of Trinity) with its sensational angelic ceiling and mural.

Klipspringers and grey duikers may also be seen in this area but it is usually only a glimpse as they nimbly spring across the rock face. .
